Zinc may ease female anger and depression

Zinc deficiency affects 30% of the world’s population and mood swings are reportedly a common symptom. Now, a pilot study from Japan has started to investigate this link by exploring whether daily supplements of zinc can help to reduce feelings of anger and depression in young women.

The Japanese researchers recruited 30 young women and randomly assigned them to receive either multivitamins, or multivitamins plus 7mg of zinc for 10 weeks. The multivitamins were given to all, to avoid vitamin deficiencies, and the supplement provided 50% of the Japanese recommended dietary allowances of vitamins A, D, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and folic acid. The major outcomes were psychological measures, somatic symptoms and serum zinc levels.
