This very resilient, colonising gut bacterium is found in the mouth and can double its population every 20 minutes. It helps digest protein and sugar and make lactase to help break down milk sugar. L. salivarius may help break down incompletely digested protein and their undesirable by-products left in the gut. It helps make some vitamins, especially Bs, and helps remove toxins made by pathogens from the gut. L. salivarius helps minimise wind by making ‘alpha-galactosidase’ enzyme, which helps break down plant foods.
