Nutrient - Ginger may ease menstrual cramps

Scientists in Iran recently carried out a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the menstrual-pain-relieving effects of ginger tablets compared to ibuprofen and mefenamic acid. One hundred and fifty female students who regularly suffered with moderate or severe menstrual cramps were assigned to receive either four 250mg doses of ginger tablets, 250mg mefenamic acid or 400mg ibuprofen. The tablets were taken for the first three days of the menstrual period and the women were asked to rate the severity of their symptoms, pain relief and satisfaction with the treatment. 

At the end of the treatment, severity of menstrual cramps decreased in all groups and no differences were found between the treatment groups in terms of severity of dysmenorrhoea, pain relief or satisfaction with the treatment. The scientists concluded that “ginger was as effective as mefenamic acid and ibuprofen in relieving pain in women with primary dysmenorrhoea”, and have called for more studies in this area.
