There are two main prebiotics, called FOS (Fructo-oligosaccharides) and Inulin. FOS and Inulin are excellent dietary sources of fibre. They have roughly 1/3 of the calories of ordinary sugar and do not raise blood sugar levels like ordinary sugar. They help enhance the effect of friendly bacteria and help optimise gut movement, stool bulk and gut pH. They help balance cholesterol levels, blood pressure and support healthy liver function. Inulin also helps enhance mineral absorption. FOS is made from beets and is half as sweet as table sugar. Use in place of table sugar or artificial sweeteners. Inulin is mildly sweet-tasting and is found naturally in Jerusalem artichokes (not to be confused with Globe artichokes).
