Nutrient - Astaxanthin

By Nutri People

Astaxanthin (pronounced asta-zan-thin) is a red, fat-soluble member of the carotenoid family of antioxidant plant pigments. It is sourced from the tiny marine alga Haematococcus pluvialis.

It is one of the most potent natural antioxidants ever discovered, more than vitamin E, beta carotene, lutein, lycopene, zeaxanthin or alpha carotene. Unlike canthaxanthin, it does not form crystals in the eye.

Astaxanthin enhances vitamin C and E activity and crosses the barrier between the brain and the retina in the eye to help protect eyes from damaging ultra-violet (UV) light. Astaxanthin helps protect skin against harmful UV light, maintains a healthy heart and arteries by protecting cholesterol and fragile fats from oxidation (rancidity), supports muscle and joint strength and flexibility during exercise, helps the body make better use of carotenoids, and supports healthy digestive function, reproduction and immunity.
