News - Fish oil, bilberry and lutein combo reduces eyestrain
According to results from a recent article published in the December issue of Biomedical Research, a combination of fish oil, bilberry extract and lutein can help improve mental fatigue and reduce symptoms of eyestrain (asthenopia).
In the double-blind, randomised, parallel-group and placebo-controlled trial, 11 subjects took supplements containing omega 3 fatty acid-rich fish oil, bilberry extract and lutein every day for four weeks. Nine separate subjects took dummy supplements for the same period. All subjects completed a questionnaire before and after the supplementation period to determine the severity of their eyestrain symptoms, including stiff shoulders, low back pain, frustration, dry eye and stuffy head. Mental fatigue was also assessed using a special symptom-rating questionnaire.
At the end of the study the researchers found symptoms of both eyestrain and mental fatigue were improved after four weeks of supplementation. What’s more, no side effects were observed after the four-week intervention plus a two-week washout period. The researchers concluded these results suggest dietary supplementation with a combination of fish oil, bilberry extract and lutein "may safely improve subjective symptoms of asthenopia and mental fatigue in humans".
