Insomnia is the difficulty  in falling asleep or staying asleep, or waking in the early hours and not being able to get back to sleep. Poor diet, blood sugar imbalance, caffeine, stress, alcohol, anxiety, depression, hormonal imbalance - especially around the menopause - and some medicines can contribute. The need for one long period of sleep at night reduces as we get older
