Condition - Candida albicans

Candida albicans is a yeast that is naturally present in the gut. When present in healthy concentrations its primary function is to consume “unfriendly” bacteria in the gut.   It is only problematic when there is an overgrowth which can cause multiple symptoms that may include: fatigue, sugar cravings, thrush, anal itching, athlete’s foot, headaches, irritablility, joint pains, sensitivity to chemicals, recurrent sore throats and bloating. 

Contributing factors

  • Antibiotic use
  • Other prescribed medicines e.g. contraceptive pill, corticosteroids, long term use of NSAIDs
  • Poor diet including over consumption of sugary and refined/processed foods
  • Stress
  • Lowered immunity

Useful supplements 

  • Multi-vitamin and mineral formula
  • Vitamin C – to help support immune system
  • Fish or flax seed oil – also to help support the immune system
  • Caprylic acid – antifungal
  • Grapefruit seed extract  - antifungal
  • Colloidal silver – antifungal
  • Aloe Vera – antifungal , helps to support digestion
  • Probiotic bacteria (oral and vaginal) – to help repopulate with “good bacteria”
  • Glutamine – one of the main fuels for the gut
  • Xylitol – healthy sugar substitute 

Dietary advice

  • Avoid sugary, yeasty and refined foods – promote bacterial growth
  • Avoid stimulants such as tea and coffee – contain caffeine which promotes bacterial growth
  • Avoid cow’s milk and dairy products except yoghurt and cottage cheese – lactose (milk sugar) promotes bacterial growth
  • Avoid fresh fruit for the first two-three weeks and then introduce low GI fruit such as one green apple a day – also avoid fruit juices
  • Avoid foods with a high content of yeast or mould e.g. alcohol, cheeses, dried fruits, melons, peanuts
  • Identify any food intoleranceswhich may be weakening the immune system and avoid these foods for three months
  • Increase fresh, whole-foods in the diet including a wide variety of vegetables, wholegrains such as brown rice, quinoa and oats, pulses, legumes and healthy protein.

Use food rich in essential fatty acids such as oily fish, nuts, seeds and healthy oils such as cold pressed flax and hemp seed oils.
